Where we cook in Los Angeles

We work across the west side and the hills: Beverly Hills, Bel Air and Holmby Hills, Brentwood and Pacific Palisades, the Hollywood Hills, Santa Monica and Venice near the water, out to Malibu along the coast, and over the hill to Calabasas and Hidden Hills.

The city itself is the constraint nobody mentions. Crossing Los Angeles at the wrong hour can take an hour and a half, so the shopping is done early and the chef arrives ahead of the traffic rather than in it. If your house is in Malibu, that difference is an afternoon. It is planned into the working hours of the Full Time and Half Time services rather than billed as an extra.

What California gives us

This is the easiest place in the world to cook seasonally, and it would be strange not to. The Wednesday farmers market in Santa Monica is where much of the serious cooking in this city does its buying, and a menu agreed the morning of a dinner rather than the week before will simply be better here.

Citrus most of the year, avocados that taste of something, stone fruit through the summer, spot prawns and sea urchin from up the coast, and wine from the central coast that does not need to apologise to anywhere. Our chefs will usually propose a menu built on whatever was best that morning, and we would encourage saying yes to it.

All year, with a shape to it

There is no closed season in Los Angeles, which means demand is steadier than in our summer destinations. What there is instead is a calendar: awards season from January to March, and the weeks around the major holidays, are when houses fill with guests and chefs are committed early.

Outside those, a week of daily service can usually be arranged with a fortnight of notice, and a single dinner in a matter of days.

We recommend booking at least 72 hours in advance to ensure availability, especially during the peak season in Los Angeles. However, we always do our best to accommodate last-minute requests.

Tell us your dates, where you are staying, how many guests and which service you have in mind. We check availability and come back with a proposal built around what you told us. Once the menu and the service are agreed, a 50% deposit confirms the booking. In peak season, get in touch as early as you can, and earlier still for a Full Time or Half Time chef across several days.

There is no single figure worth quoting: it depends on the destination, the number of guests, which service you book and the menu. Ingredients are billed separately at what they cost, with receipts. Travel beyond the areas we list for a destination, additional staff and unusually long hours are quoted on top. You will have the whole price in writing before anything is confirmed.

A chef with you through the day: breakfast, lunch and dinner, up to 13 working hours including the time spent shopping. Your chef plans the menus, does the shopping, cooks and leaves the kitchen clean, with everything built around your tastes, your routine and any dietary requirements. Groceries are billed separately at cost price, with receipts.

Two meals a day instead of three: breakfast and lunch, or breakfast and dinner, with up to 10 working hours a day including the time spent shopping. Your chef plans the menus, does the shopping, cooks and leaves the kitchen clean. Groceries are billed separately at cost price, with receipts.

Our private chef service covers private homes and villas for up to 39 guests. By law, private chef services cannot cover weddings or events for 40 guests or more, so we are unable to take on larger bookings.

Yes, your chef handles all grocery shopping using the freshest local and seasonal ingredients. The cost of ingredients is billed separately at cost price.
